Step 1: Decide When, and How Often, to Clean Up Yard Waste

Deciding when to clean up fallen leaves is a personal decision. If you wait until the end of the season, when most of the leaves have fallen, you may be able to get all of the leaves cleaned up in one fell swoop. However, there are reasons to keep the leaves at bay throughout the season. Tidiness is one; some homeowners don't like the look of disheveled leaves on their property. Safety is another reason to do regular maintenance. If you have children who want to play in your yard, layers of heavy fallen leaves can obscure hazards such as broken branches or sprinklers and other lawn tools. This leads to additional tripping hazards.

Step 2: Get a Container for Yard Waste

The container you'll need for your yard waste depends on how much square footage there is, and how often you want to haul away fallen leaves. If you are doing the job on a regular basis, you might get away with a regular yard waste receptacle that can be put out alongside your garbage bins and recycling containers. Step 5: Catch the Stragglers
